What should you know about India’s 1st home chef before watching her biopic?

In a country where cooking is considered an everyday, unimportant skill to be known strictly by women, people like Sanjeev Kapoor and Tarla Dalal break all barriers of stereotypes in this patriarchal country. Tarla Dalal turned tables of the entire culinary world singlehandedly while remaining in the premises of her own home. She didn’t let restrictions hold her back from doing what she loved – cooking – and converting it into her dream career. The song ‘I’m on vacation every single day ’cause I love my occupation,’ fits well with achievers like Tarla Dalal.

Finally, her underrated success got its deserving limelight with the release of her biopic ‘Tarla’ on OTT on July 7. Featuring Huma Qureshi as the lead, the movie collected lots of love and made Dalal even more heartwarmingly close to us than she already was. With various cooking shows and cookbooks, Dalal doesn’t forget to keep the homely feeling of her recipes intact. But, what is it about Tarla that we don’t know?

Tarla’s husband was her first and biggest supporter which made her cooking classes a massive hit. After she passed away at 77, her daughter Renu – also a popular chef today – continued the heir of the queen of cooking.

Home chef Dalal has written over 17000 recipes and sold 10 million copies of over a hundred books. Her cooking show has aired globally, even in the UK and USA. Her cookbooks come translated in 5 languages excluding English.

Tarla’s contribution to the art of cooking led her to receive a Padma Shri Award in 2007. Instead of saying, ‘behind every successful man is a woman,’ we must rephrase it as, ‘behind every successful person is a supportive family.’
