Monkey Man made its international debut on Thursday. Dev Patel’s directorial debut faced off against the horror film The First Omen and the blockbuster Godzilla x Kong.

Dev Patel’s directorial debut had a good preview night, earning the second-highest sales. On the first day of release, Monkey Man overcame The First Omen to take second place at the box office.

It grossed more than $1.4 million on Thursday night, while The First Omen earned barely $725,000. Godzilla x Kong held the top spot at the Hollywood box office.

Monkey Man has an excellent 88 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film has a 7.3 rating on IMDb, while Metacritic gives it a 71%. So far, critics have praised the picture for its action-packed drama.

However, it is thought that the film has not yet been cleared by the CBFC. Because of its graphic depiction of violence and connections to Hindu mythology, the film will have a difficult time getting a release in today’s political climate.
