On May 1, rapper Doja Cat attended her first Met Gala while dressing as Choupette, Karl Lagerfeld’s adored cat. The annual gala’s 2019 theme, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” pays homage to the late Chanel design director who passed away in 2019.
Before arriving at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where the event is hosted each year, the 27-year-old artist, who was recently named one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People of 2023, was spotted leaving her New York City hotel surrounded by umbrellas.
She appeared on the red carpet wearing a floor-length, floor-length silver jewelled gown with cat ears covering her head, a prosthetic cat snout, and cat claw nails. Even when speaking to Vogue anchor LaLa Anthony, she meowed. The artist’s appearance and her being caught vaping on the carpet both sparked immediate responses on the internet.
Before the event, the genuine Choupette, whose attendance at the gala had been rumoured, declared on Instagram that she “preferred to stay peacefully and cosy at home.”
