Actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh is playing the titular Indian singer and musician Amar Singh Chamkila in Imtiaz Ali’s ‘Chamkila’. Talking about the biopic at a press meeting, Diljit shared that he was initially apprehensive about it.
Diljit, who plays a pivotal role in the film alongside Parineeti Chopra, confessed that he initially harbored reservations about how Bollywood would handle the sensitive subject matter.

Diljit further opened up, saying, “When I first heard about Bollywood taking on the Chamkila story, I had my doubts. I even attempted a similar project called Jodi, but due to rights issues, it remained a fiction. So, naturally, I questioned if they could do justice to it.”
He added, “But when I heard his perspective, it was different. It was Chamkila’s story, and that story, even I didn’t know that well. Amar Singh Chamkila wrote his music, played it on his own and even performed it on stage.” Diljit also said that making such a big film on Chamkila was a matter of great pride for him and his people. So, he just surrendered to the vision of Imtiaz Ali.

Meanwhile, Parineeti Chopra, who is the female lead and plays the role of Chamkila’s wife, said that though she hails from Punjab and can speak good Punjabi, she felt like a student in front of Diljit Dosanjh, her co-actor in the film.

The Imtiaz Ali directorial film sees him joining forces with his frequent collaborators, including lyricist Irshad Kamil, composer A.R. Rahman, and playback singer Mohit Chauhan. All of them attended the ‘Next on Netflix’ event at the Mehboob Studio in Mumbai on Thursday.
Amar Singh Chamkila is said to be shot in real locations. The film promises to transport the audiences to the vibrant and rhythmic world of Punjab’s folk music, right to the rustic Akhadaas (live music performances in villages) where Chamkila’s voice would once roar.
