Sushmita Sen’s remarkable portrayal of transgender activist Shreegauri Sawant in the upcoming  Jio Cinema Original series “Taali” has earned continuous praise from her fans. Scheduled for an Independence Day release, the show will vividly depict the journey of Ganesh’s transformation into Gauri, the numerous challenges she encountered and the enduring struggles that followed.

While Sushmita felt a sense of joy upon receiving the offer, her acceptance wasn’t immediate. She engaged in discussions with the creators, and even after several exchanges, her meeting with Gauri solidified her commitment to the role. She told Indian Express, “While many could take on this role, I knew I would undertake it with the utmost love.”

Sushmita Sen‘s dedication shines through in every aspect, from nailing the appearance to fine-tuning her voice to align with the character’s essence, evident in the trailer. She emphasized their commitment to authenticity and avoiding shortcuts. Although the appearance was pre-designed, she collaborated with Atul Mongia to master the character’s body language.

Sushmita also praised the stylist’s meticulous attention to detail, highlighting the extensive research on Gauri and Ganesh’s appearances. Gauri’s unique attributes were meticulously replicated, such as wearing her watch with the dial facing inwards or adorning a black thread and rudraksha. Sushmita revealed that she had distinct sessions with Gauri, with the added presence of transgender educators and actors on set, especially during scenes involving rituals or specific habitual gestures, ensuring authenticity and respect for the portrayal.

Amid the adoration pouring in from the audience, there exists a segment that believes Shreegauri herself could have portrayed the role, and some have voiced the opportunity for a transgender actor to take on the part. When inquired about whether such criticism affects her, considering her dedicated efforts on the project, Sushmita acknowledged that while these perspectives have validity, it was ultimately Gauri’s decision to have her portray the character.

Sushmita expressed, “I believe in a larger context, their perspective holds merit. Talented individuals must be hired based on their capabilities, regardless of gender or the role’s requirements. However, in this specific instance, Gauri personally selected me. I was unaware of this project’s existence until she ensured the makers approached me. I’m forever grateful to her; her decision gave me a more impactful platform to amplify her story. Thus, the criticism doesn’t trouble me because this isn’t just a common narrative—it’s her unique story. Gauri possesses the rightful authority to make that choice. As an actor and a human being, I eagerly seize every opportunity to champion inclusivity. Regardless of the praise or critique, I won’t hesitate because I wholeheartedly believe this is the path I was destined to tread. I’ll utilize every available platform to advocate for inclusiveness.”
