Story
Chamkila was born on July 21, 1960, in the destitute Dalit Ramdasia family of Dugri village near Ludhiana. Her name was Dhani Ram.
He worked as a worker in Ludhiana’s textile mills but had a strong interest in music. His desire led him to join acting organizations, where he refined his vocal skills and learned to play the harmonium and tumbu (a single-string instrument).
At the age of 18, Dhani approached Punjab’s famed folk singer, Surinder Shinda. Shinda was impressed by his raw voice and took him under his wing.
As a creative songwriter, he quickly established himself in Shinda’s ensemble. He also worked with celebrities such as Mohammad Sadiq and Kuldeep Manak.
Diljit Dosanjh, unquestionably the biggest Punjabi celebrity right now, stars as Chamkila in filmmaker Imtiaz Ali’s next film.
The film, which now streams on Netflix, aims to illuminate the enigmatic life of the renowned musician who tragically met his demise at the age of 27.
