Taylor Swift talks about the Queer Community

Friday night, Taylor Swift began the Chicago leg of her “Eras Tour” with a stirring message in favour of the LGBTQ community during Pride month. She said, “I’m looking out tonight and I’m seeing so many incredible individuals who are living authentically and beautifully,” Swift said at Chicago’s Soldier Field, adding “this is a safe space for you, this is a celebratory space for you.”

She shifted her attention from her celebration of the community to the realities of the current political environment, saying, “We can’t talk about Pride without talking about pain.” She mentioned recent “harmful pieces of legislation that have put people in the LGBTQ and queer community at risk.” She continued, “It’s painful for everyone,” and said she tries to let her fans know when important primaries and midterm elections occur in an effort to get them to vote.

The “Midnights” singer started expressing her political views in 2018 when she supported Tennessee Democrats Phil Bredesen and Jim Cooper in their respective bids for the Senate and the House of Representatives. “We can support as much as we want during Pride month but if we’re not doing our research on these elected officials – Are they advocates? Are they allies? Are they protectors of equality? Do I want to vote for them?” she said.
