OTT is the new cool: Theatre-flop movies that became superhit on OTT platforms

People’s lives are becoming increasingly exhausting. Even to go to the theatre for a movie now sounds like a turn-off, ever since OTT has provided us with the comfort to watch movies in our couch. Anybody would choose to lean on their beds and sofas in their comfortable Pyjamas with popcorn beside their family and watch a movie. Logically speaking, it’s lighter on the pocket, too. One whole month’s subscription gives you multiple options which is equivalent to one-time theatre round for a movie, with no guarantee that you’ll like it.

For many such reasons, OTT is the first preference of producers and directors nowadays. Here are movies that became a huge hit on OTTs that the theatre didn’t  value:

1. Jersey: This film starring Shahid Kapoor clashed with Ranveer Singh‘s sports movie 83 in the theatres which pulled it down. However, OTT came to the rescue and gave it a second chance.
2. Jayeshbhai Jordaar: Ranveer Singh has played the role of a Gujarati Bhai who saves his unborn daughter from female feticide. Due to the pandemic, the movie saw a downfall but OTT changed its destiny.
3. Thappad: A controversial movie by Taapsee Pannu where she leaves her on-screen husband because of a slap. In theatres, patriarchy won over this eye-opening concept. OTT, on the other hand, provided it an unbiased platform to perform.
4. Tumbbad: This horror film was greatly underappreciated in the theatres. But when people watched it on OTT, they believed this one should’ve entered Oscar 2019 instead of Gully Boy.
5. Sonchiriya: On OTT, Bihar’s talent shone through – featuring late Sushant Singh Rajput and Manoj Bajpayee alongside Marathi Mulgi Bhumi Pednekar for its direction, acting and cinematography.
6. Mukkabaaz: This is a sports film about boxing which is said to be better than Mary Kom. It has premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival after which people saw it as a masterpiece on OTT.
