Nepal lifts ban on Adipurush, but Kathmandu’s mayor is against it

Ever since its release on June 16th, Adipurush, directed by Om Raut, has been receiving constant backlash, whether it’s about the dialogues, VFX, excessive modernization, or the inaccuracies of the depiction, from celebrities and audiences alike. One such conflict that arose in Nepal was the ban of the film, but as of Thursday, this ban has been lifted by the Nepal court, allowing the screening of all movies already approved by the country’s censor board, including Adipurush, as it is unethical, said Patan high court judge.

Despite this, the mayor of Kathmandu, Balender Shah, has vowed not to let the film be screened and is ready to face what may come for defying the order. Shah feels so due to the incorrect listing of Sita’s birthplace as India, claiming her as ‘India’s daughter, whereas many believe that Sita was born in Janakpur, which is in Southern Nepal. He stated that the matter has a lot to do with “Nepal’s sovereignty and independence” which cannot be let down.

Shah shared on Facebook: “The film’s writer said that Nepal was under India, this clearly shows India’s ill intention. To term this as a stunt by the Nepal government and to issue an order by the court in favour of screening the movie means, to accept that Nepal was once under India’s rule, the court and the government are both the slaves of India.”
