Karan Johar’s struggle with ‘fitting in’ as a straight person during school days

Karan Johar

Karan Johar, one of the most successful filmmakers in Bollywood opened up about his struggle during school days regarding his s*xuality. As smooth as everyone assumes his life was and is, in reality, it isn’t. He came out as gay a few years ago after everyone knew who he was and soon, he received equal amounts of bashing and acceptance, to which he paid no heed. But, back in the days when he was a little school-going boy, he had to pretend and make-believe the very core of his existence – his s*xuality.

Recently, Karan Johar appeared in the YouTube show called Be A Man Yaar hosted by Nikhil Taneja. In an episode, he said, “I pretended to be in love with a girl in the 10th standard. Her name was Shalaka.” The filmmaker added, “Today what you call ‘gay, ’fag’ or ‘homo’, said in a derogatory tone, it was called pansy in those days and, it was a word that literally, had really pushed me into a shell.” Karan also revealed that Shah Rukh Khan was the only man who did not make him feel any lesser.

Although Karan Johar is unmarried, he continues to spread awareness about s*xualities. Things have changed drastically in the recent past. People are coming around to welcoming the idea of LGBTQIA+ and acknowledging the existence of this community. Yet, they’re tabooed and frowned upon because they’re different to what people are used to seeing. Many people who aren’t straight struggle during their childhood and adolescence, pretending to be male or female until after they grow up and gather the courage to come out and embrace who they truly are.

Apart from his personal life, he’s – needless to say – one of the best in the industry. His movies are rewatched and enjoyed every time one gets a chance. His movie Kuch Kuch Hota Hai – the era of love – still raids people’s heart like nobody else. Now, with Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani, he announced the threshold beginning of a new era of love and it surely was a blockbuster hit. With ‘new’, he didn’t just mean modified drama or fancier sets – he meant addressing tabooed societal issues and eye-opening concepts.

Featuring Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh in the lead, RARKPK has become everyone’s go-to romantic movie in the present.
