The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science or shortly called AMPAS is an organization set with the vision of mediating and improving the film industry’s image across the globe. Membership in the academy only comes by invitation from the Board of Governors. Eligibility for the membership comes with a nomination for the Oscars, Sponsorship of two present academy members which renews annually.
This year AMPAS has invited over 398 artists and executives from various film industries across the world. This includes Austin Butler, Taylor Swift, KeKe Palmer, Ke Huay Quan along with others. If all these members accept the invitation, Academy will have over 10,000 members with around 9000 people getting the eligibility to vote for next year’s Oscars.
These invitees include previous Oscar Nominees as well also containing winners of 95th Oscar winners. Representing Indian Film Industry globally and also winning an Oscar for Naatu Naatu song, SS Rajamouli’s RRR cast, and crew are also included in the invitation.
Music Composer M.M.Keeravani, Lyricist Chandrabose, RRR production designer Sabu Cyril, Cinematographer K.K.Senthil Kumar, and Main leads of RRR, Ram Charan Tej and Jr. NTR have also got the invitation. Apart from the RRR members, other Indians including Mani Ratnam, Shaunak Sen, Karan Johar, Siddharth Roy Kapur, and Chaitanya Tamhane also got invited to become members of AMPAs.
Addressing the invitees, CEO Bill Kramer stated that “The Academy is proud to welcome these artists and professionals into our membership”. President Janet Yang said, “They represent extraordinary global talent across cinematic disciplines and have made a vital impact on the arts and science of motion pictures and movie fans worldwide.”
AMPAS 2023 class consists of 40% females including professional fronts. 34% represent ethnic groups while 52% among them are from 51 countries and territories outside the US.
