Dukaan is a Hindi film that is set to release on April 5. The audience had mixed reactions when watching the trailer of the film. While few of the audience called it a second copy of Mimi. While promoting the movie, makers and duo Siddharth Singh and Garima Wahal who worked for Bajirao Mastani, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Padmaavat, Kabir Singh, Animal, and others have talked about the film and why is important in the Indian context.
Dukaan Plot
The film explores the riveting themes of basic freedom and the autonomy of the women involved in commercial surrogacy who have the power to ‘create’. Set in the bosom of Gujarat, the film tells the narrative of Jasmine (Monika Pnawar), a young lady who embarks on a brave journey as a surrogate mother.
Dukaan Makers Say…
Dukaan delves into the practice of commercial surrogacy in India. Elaborating on this, Garima said, “The first idea came to us in 2010 when we heard that commercial surrogacy is happening in places like Gujarat. We thought let it germinate for a while. Meanwhile, we wrote the screenplay and dialogue of (Goliyon Ki Raasleela) Ram-Leela. Back then, surrogacy was legal in India, and our country used to be the surrogacy capital of the world. We met a lot of couples – from Israel and the rest of the world. We met a lot of surrogate women. Those meetings stayed with us. And then the script was formed after a lot of research. Then we started to work on it around 2021-22.”
Siddharth added that they were amazed to see how these surrogate women celebrate motherhood in Gujarat. “These women do baby showers for their unborn child – the one that is not even theirs. In Gujarat, motherhood is celebrated in a big way,” he said. To this, Garima added, “In fact, their Garba celebration is also derived from Garva.”
“We want this movie to start meaningful conversations in the Lower House making some amendments to this bill.
“There is nothing wrong if someone is paying money to continue their lineage and someone is lending their womb for rent and bringing a new life for the parents. It is just that this practice needs to be regulated by the government so that neither party faces injustice.” added the duo.

Earlier in February, Vanga unveiled the trailer of ‘Dukaan’.It is produced by A Jhunjhunwala and S K Ahluwalia under Siddharth Garima‘s Kalamkaar Picture Productions and will hit the theatres on April 5.
