Denis Villeneuve finally joined the list of billion-dollar clubs as Dune series joins the prestigious billion-dollar club.

In an extraordinary coincidence, three big franchises’ most recent episodes, which are presently playing in theaters throughout the world, reached key box office milestones this weekend.

While the Kung Fu Panda series surpassed $2 billion in global box office revenue, Denis Villeneuve’s two-part Dune trilogy joined the long-running Ghostbusters franchise in grossing $1 billion worldwide.

This follows Dune: Part Two’s impressive performance in its fourth weekend of release. The film grossed somewhat more than $17.5 million domestically, plus another $30 million from approximately 73 other markets, for a total global gross of around $575 million.

Domestic cinemas have contributed $233 million, with the remaining $341 million coming from outside countries.

Warner Bros. attempted to extend an olive branch to Villeneuve with Dune: Part Two, which received an expensive PR campaign that included Nolan’s support and a major global roll-out on Premium Large-Format and IMAX screens.

Indeed, these large-format locations account for a sizable portion of the film’s revenue. IMAX alone contributed $124 million to Dune: Part Two’s global total, and the film has joined IMAX’s top ten highest-grossing movies of all time.

Dune: Part Two has also been a success in China, grossing more than $40 million so far.

Dune 2 trailer

Dune: Part Two delivers an epic conclusion to Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s original book, laying the groundwork for the franchise’s continuing expansion.

The sequel starts off where Dune 2021 left off, following Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) as he integrates into the Fremen culture and struggles with the Lisan al Gaib prophecy. The story of Dune 2 revolves mostly around Chani (Zendaya) and Paul’s romance as they fight House Harkonnen for the fate of Arrakis. Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) complicates matters by spreading the assumption that her son is the Fremen’s savior.
