Bollywood vs. South Cinema Debate: Amitabh Bachchan disagrees that the South is doing better than Bollywood.

In a recent event, Amitabh Bachchan strongly reacted to those claiming South Indian cinema is doing better than Bollywood these days.

Bollywood’s legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan stated on Saturday that the film industry is frequently blamed for changes in national morality, arguing that society has always served as an inspiration for cinema. During his address to the students at the Symbiosis Film Festival in Pune, the 81-year-old screen icon spoke about the criticism received by the film industry, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of technological advancement in cinema.

“Many times, the film industry is subjected to harsh criticism and accusations that it is responsible for changing the country’s morals and people’s attitudes. I’m sure you’re aware that Jaya, who has studied formally at the Institute (FTII), would agree that stories and films are created from experiences we observe in nature, the world, and everyday life, and that is what serves as our inspiration,” the actor stated.

Bachchan recalled how his late father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, a noted poet and writer, would watch many Hindi movies on repeat. The actor stated that his father enjoyed the poetic justice aspect of cinema. “Cinema possesses its own power. During his final years, my father would watch a television film on cassette every evening. Many of the films he saw were repeated. I asked him every evening, ‘You’ve seen the movie; don’t you get bored? What can you find in Hindi cinema? He said, ‘I’d see poetic justice in three hours. You and I will not see poetic justice in our lifetime. And that is the education that cinema provides to everyone.”
