5 years of Manto: Yeh zamana naaqaabil-e-bardaasht hai

Nawazuddin Siddiqui Manto movie

Nawazuddin Siddiqui, the man who gave us such exceptional characters to look back to, that we may forget the movie but not the way he played the roles, or more so, the movies are vividly registered in our minds because of the way he carried his work through. Manto is one of those movies.

Today, as it turns 5, here’s a throwback to the time Nawazuddin Siddiqui became brutally truthful in his real life in an attempt to absorb Manto’s personality for the role. In the interview, he said,  “You are not a computer. So playing a character like Manto does affect you, and you have to try and get out of it, because you have to move on to the next character, the next project, where you need to start from zero. After finishing the shoot, for the next 10-12 days, I was still in the same emotional state. I called Nandita (Das, the director) and told her, ‘This character should get out of my mind soon, else it will be bad for me.’ Because at that time, I became too honest and truthful. Uss waqt itna zyada sach bolne laga tha ki maine apni band bajwa li (I began speaking so truthfully that I ended up harming myself).

Released on September 21st 2018, it has a whopping 4.6 star rating on Google. The movie is about Saadat Hasan Manto, a writer who used his pen sharper than a sword. He is best known for his stories about the partition of India, which he opposed, immediately following independence in 1947. Manto’s most notable work has been archived by Rekhta.

Siddhiqui’s recent movie was Tiku Weds Sheru with Avneet Kaur on Amazon Prime.
