Poonam Panday’s death is a tragic…Look out for these warning signs of cancer in women

Cervical Cancer

Bollywood actress Poonam Pandey’s unfortunate demise at 32 has sent shockwaves across the film industry and amongst her fanbase. The cause of her death was cervical cancer. One of the most prevalent cancers among women, it reinforces the importance for women to remain alert to its warning signs and consult a doctor if they notice any abnormalities.

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in Indian women, accounting for about 18 per cent of all cancers. Nearly two in three cervical cancer patients die in India owing to late diagnosis. Let us know what cervical cancer is, its diagnosis, and its treatment.

Cervical cancer arises in the cervix, the lower region of the uterus. Its early stage might not exhibit outward symptoms, emphasizing the essentiality of routine check-ups. Nevertheless, several warning signs are associated with it.

1. Abnormal vaginal bleeding, which could manifest as bleeding between menstrual cycles, post-intimacy, or post-menopause, warrants professional consultation. Do note this isn’t an outright sign of cancer.

2. Persistent pelvic area discomfort, particularly during urination or intercourse, may also hint toward cervical cancer. Unusual discharge, characterized by color, odor, or consistency alterations, may denote an underlying infection or potential cervical cancer.

3. Experiencing pain during intimacy may allude to the presence of cervical cancer. Changes in bowel or bladder habits, including constipation, diarrhoea, or urinary issues, could also be signs of cervical cancer.

Diagnosis Programs

Regular screenings, such as the Pap test (Pap smear) and HPV testing, allow for early detection of abnormal cells or HPV infection. By identifying precancerous or early-stage cervical lesions, healthcare professionals can intervene and provide timely treatment, preventing the progression to full-blown cancer. Early detection is the key to defeating cervical cancer.

HPV vaccination initiatives and improved treatment options have collectively contributed to a decline in cervical cancer cases and mortality rates. However, it is essential to maintain and expand these efforts to ensure continued success in the fight against this disease.

Improved Treatment Options

Depending on the stage and severity of the cancer, treatment may involve surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of these approaches. Targeted therapies and immunotherapies are also being explored as potential treatments for advanced or recurrent cervical cancer.

Furthermore, efforts are being made to enhance the quality of life for cervical cancer survivors through comprehensive survivorship programs. These programs address survivors’ physical, emotional, and psychological well-being, providing support and resources to help them navigate life after treatment.
