Sean Penn Says He Was Not ‘Terribly Surprised’ By Matthew Perry’s Death, But Why?

Sean Penn is a prominent American actor and film director. He has won an Oscar in the Best Actor category for his roles in the mystery drama Mystic River and the biopic Milk. In a recent interview, the actor shared his thoughts about the late ‘Friends’ actor Matthew Perry, who passed away at 54 on October 28, apparently due to drowning. The Oscar winner has praised the former Friends actor and said his death was ‘tragic’ and appreciated Perry for having the courage to talk openly about his struggle with addictions. Penn has also been through his share of challenges with addictions and knows how difficult life gets after indulging in them.

He said that Matthew was a talented guy but added, “I can’t claim to have known him well, but I liked him very much.” While talking about Perry, he opened up about their recent encounter at the Los Angeles airport. Penn said, “I saw him somewhat recently, and we were both catching a flight out of Los Angeles airport, and I complimented him on what I knew of his book.” He continued, “I hadn’t read the book, but I had seen several of his interviews, and he seemed to be talking about it, had confronted it, and was very intelligent and bold about it, generously offering his experience to people to be helpful.”

In further discussion about the topic, Penn addressed, “It’s tragic, I can’t say that I was terribly surprised. I don’t know what the whole coroner’s report things and everything, but I know he had done a lot of damage to his organs over the years.” Sean added, “You know, tough situation, and he got to do that, he got to leave that tale behind, and he got to give a lot of joy to a lot of people with his talent. So, I wish his family well.”

Sean Penn appeared in a couple of Friends episodes, where he first collaborated with the real face of Chandler Bing. In many of his interviews, Matthew stated that he didn’t watch his own show because it would take him back to those days when he was uncontrollably addicted and also in the rehab phase. He said that he could particularly point out what sort of addiction he was into by looking at his physique in different seasons. Matthew Perry will always be remembered as a kind soul who wanted to help people and make the world a better place.
