Humiliated for speaking her mother tongue: Neena Gupta doesn’t budge

Her name may not be the one we recollect but it’s a face we’ve all seen on several platforms. Let’s first get to know her before we hop into why she’s making the headlines today.

Needa Gupta is an Indian actress in Hindi films and television serials. Famously seen as Mrs. Kaushik in Badhai Ho with Ayushmann Khurana, our memory blinks a light, saying, ‘Oh! She plays all the mom roles, right?’ Absolutely right. Her talent hasn’t gone unnoticed, thankfully. She’s won received several awards including two National Film Awards, three Filmfare Awards and two Screen Awards.

Born to an LLB and officer, it reflects in her outspoken, fearless personality. Recently, she posted a video on Instagram with the caption, “Khabardaar agar Hindi medium bola toh” (Don’t you dare call me a Hindi medium). What brought Neena to film such a video?

The abovementioned facts about Neena Gupta confirm that she’s dominated her career with Hindi, her mother tongue. She prefers speaking in Hindi even at home and on her social media but people have humiliated her repetitively about it. As an Indian citizen, it’s been an unending conflict, a task to find balance amidst the diversity of languages. Linguism has been one of the biggest issues in the history of a democratic India. Freedom of choice, therefore, was given to us as a right. Sadly, it’s only on paper.

Neena Gupta expresses how ‘Hindi medium’ is used as a derogatory connotation simply because someone doesn’t use a lot of English. Fans in the comments are found tremendously supporting her perspective. One of them says, “In today’s time everyone can speak English in fact speaking fluent Hindi is rare. So if anything one should be proud to know Hindi and not so much pride in knowing English. This English fascination is all hangover of the British colonization in India.”
