X-Men ’97: Trailer, OTT Release Date, Plot and Everything We Know

The legacy of 1992’s X-Men: The Animated Series can be found all over the present-day Marvel Cinematic Universe. The team behind the sequel to “X-Men: The Animated Series” looks back on how the original cartoon became the GOAT.

X-Men: The Animated Series debuted on U.S. TV sets in October 1992 as part of the Fox Kids Saturday morning lineup of cartoons, which also included Bobby’s World, Power Rangers, The Tick, and Batman: The Animated Series.

X-Men ’97 now picks up directly where X-Men: The Animated Series left off. The world, both inside and outside the show, has changed, but the new series hopes to spread a similar message of acceptance, much like the one Zann and her costars find when attending fan conventions. Something that sticks out to her now is those fans who cosplay as her version of Rogue — even men.

X-Men ’97 Trailer

The X-Men ’97 trailer was released on February 15, 2024, gaining over 700,000 views in one hour. The trailer not only provides a further glimpse at the plot itself – with Magneto vying for control over the X-Men as the team comes to terms with the loss of Charles Xavier – but also with some interesting character developments, including showing a now heavily pregnant Jean Grey.

X-Men ’97 Release Date

X-Men ’97 is set to premiere on March 20, 2024, having been moved back from a prior fall 2023 date. For now, audiences who want to catch up on the original show can stream X-Men: The Animated Series on Disney+. At its peak, X-Men: The Animated Series drew 23 million viewers to television screens. Considering the hype surrounding X-Men ’97, the new show seems ready to surpass the original’s success.

X-Men ’97 Story

Apart from the fact that Magneto – and not Professor X – will be leading the X-Men, there are a multitude of other reasons why X-Men ’97 will be different from the movies or any other recent and prominent onscreen adaptation.

Though Marvel hasn’t released much about X-Men ’97’s plot, the entire premise of the new series has been laid out in X-Men: The Animated Series. This means that X-Men ’97 won’t be bogged down by world-building at all, and can immediately dive into the main story.

X-Men ’97 Cast

While anticipation is high for the reveal of the MCU’s next mutant character, X-Men ’97 will be bringing back several of Marvel’s most beloved mutants in one fell swoop.

Headed by Eric Lewald, the series brought to life the mutant characters of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s comics with a team consisting of Cyclops (Norm Spencer), Jean Grey (Catherine Disher), Wolverine (Cal Dodd), Storm (Alison Sealy-Smith), Rogue (Lenore Zann), Gambit (Chris Potter), Beast (George Buza), Jubilee (Alyson Court), Professor X (Cedric Smith), and a new character created for TV, Morph (Rob Rubin).
