The downfall started for Disney+ Hotstar.

According to recent reports, Disney+ Hotstar, the popular Indian OTT platform, may soon lose its top spot due to the loss of rights to key content. After losing the digital rights to the Indian Premier League (IPL) a few months ago, Hotstar has now lost the rights to HBO content as well.

The IPL has been a primary reason for Hotstar’s huge subscription base, and the digital rights for this year’s tournament have now been acquired by Viacom 18 Group, with Jio Cinema set to stream the event.

In addition to the loss of IPL rights, Hotstar will also be losing access to several popular HBO shows, including Game of Thrones, Succession, The Sopranos, Euphoria, and The Wire, from April 1st.

These shows have been a significant factor in bringing in premium subscriptions for the platform, and their loss is likely to result in a drop in subscriber numbers.

Reports suggest that HBO content may soon shift to Amazon Prime Video in India, with an additional subscription required to access the shows. However, there has been no official confirmation of this development as yet.
