“We don’t do it for you. Deal with it.” Zaira Wasim about eating with a Niqaab

Zaira Wasim is an Indian actress that broke the Bollywood Cinema with her very first debut itself. She had the opportunity to work with the best of all time – Aamir Khan. Yes, she’s the reel-life Geeta Phogat from the movie Dangal – based on the real life superstar athlete girls who made India proud. “Mhaari chhoriyan chhoro se kam hai ke” (My girls aren’t less than boys) is a dialogue that slapped patriarchy and se*ism right across its face. At the young age of 16, Zaira Wasim slayed her entry into Bollywood with the highest-grossing Indian film, earning more than 2000 crores worldwide.

Zaira is a Muslim that follows Islam with pride, despite the hate she gets for it. In a secular country like India, we all have freedom of religion but it’s falls utterly flat when we also have people misinterpreting the definition of freedom of speech on the side. Recently, Zaira posted a tweet about a woman eating with her Niqaab on. For the unversed, a Niqaab is a cloth-veil that covers the entire face of a Muslim woman in public. Zaira, supporting the gesture, says she did the same at a wedding out of choice.

The comment section is a battlefield. One part of it is supportive of letting her do what she wishes, respecting her, while another part is questioning her, calling her ‘caged’ and ‘orthodox’.

As humans, we must let each and every individual to make their own decisions, especially since religion is such a personal topic, even if it’s a celebrity who has chosen to publicize a part of their life
