After meeting Olsen in San Francisco, she agrees to accompany him to his home near the tranquil community of Elk Flats, Nevada, where they begin their life together. The Civil War divides them when Olsen makes the terrible decision to fight for the Union.

Viggo Mortensen says the film is set in the wild landscapes and lawless society of the Far West in the 1860s.

Mortesen directed the film from his own script, with Colin Morgan, Ray McKinnon, W. Earl Brown, and Atlas Green rounding out the cast.

Regina Solórzano, Jeremy Thomas, and Mortensen produce the movie, which Deadline’s Pete Hammond describes as a film that John Ford and Howard Hawks “would love.”

Following his directorial debut Falling in 2020, Mortensen says he began writing The Dead Don’t Hurt while under lockdown during the height of the pandemic.

“The first image that came to me was of a young girl playing alone in a forest and dreaming about the adventures she might have in her life, he said.”

Mortensen further asserts, “I drew inspiration from my mother’s childhood experiences and dreams, as well as the landscapes she knew, for the girl who lost her mother in 2015. As I developed the story, it evolved into a tale about a strong, independent woman.
