Sita character in Adipurush lands into controversy; here’s why

Om Raut’s directorial Adipurush starring Prabhas has hit the screens this week and is receiving mixed response. Adipurush is based on the Hindu epic Ramayana. It’s based on Valmiki Ramayana.

Meanwhile, controversy over Sita’s birthplace in the film came to the limelight. The film’s screenings were stopped in Nepal’s Kathmandu for allegedly portraying Sita as Indian in the movie.

The demand from Nepal is to remove the dialogue in the movie that states “Janki is the daughter of India.” Because as per the Ramayanam, Sita was born in Nepal, which used to be called Janakpur. And that’s the place where Rama went and married Sita.

But in the movie, Sita was shown as she has born in India. So, Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah issued an ultimatum to the Adipurush makers to correct their mistakes both in India and Nepal. He stated that mistakes have to be corrected in the next three days, or they will stop the screenings of all Indian movies in Nepal’s capital city Kathmandu.

Mayor Balen Shah in a tweet on Thursday wrote that Adipurush claims “Sita is the daughter of India”. “Until and unless the slogan ‘Janki is a daughter of India’ in the South Indian film Adipurush is corrected not only in Nepal but also in India, no Hindi film will be allowed to run in the Kathmandu Metropolitan City. Three days have been given to correct this. Hail Mother Sita,” he wrote in Nepali.
