Ponniyin Selvan I
At 65 years old, veteran actor Nasser has been part of nearly 700 films during his impressive 34-year career. Nasser has mentioned that his standout films are those made with filmmaker Mani Ratnam or actor Kamal Haasan. He gained nationwide recognition for his portrayal of the deformed uncle in Baahubali. Recently, he played the enigmatic antagonist in Ponniyin Selvan I and II. Nasser has disclosed that due to scheduling conflicts, he only managed to shoot for a single day for the project and laments being unable to participate in more scenes.
Nasser has returned with a web series titled “The Jengaburu Curse,” where he portrays a complex two-faced character. Prior to the show’s launch on SonyLIV, Nasser conducted an interview in which he revealed intriguing facts about his involvement in significant projects like the Ponniyin Selvan and Baahubali movies. He also mentioned turning down the opportunity to be part of films like Lagaan for specific reasons.
When asked about his unrecognizable portrayal as the enigmatic Veerapandiyan in Ponniyin Selvan I and II, Nasser expressed regret, saying, “I feel terrible because that is a significant character. It had to have many more scenes. I was supposed to be there for five or six days, but unfortunately, it was such a big film and was getting rescheduled. So either there was a schedule cancellation, or when they called, I wasn’t there as I was elsewhere. Somehow it happened that I couldn’t provide the dates for it. All my scenes are shot in one day.”
‘Mani Ratnam is an extremely intense director. While he might go to great lengths for friends, he won’t compromise the film for the sake of friendship. To him, a film holds greater importance than any personal bond. He’ll only approach an actor if they fit a particular character in the story. I’m truly delighted and fortunate that I’ve been cast in his films multiple times. When I look at my best works, many of them have been alongside Mani Ratnam and Kamal Hassan’, he added.
