The film depicts the story of Leonard Shelby, an insurance investigator who suffers from anterograde amnesia and uses notes and tattoos to hunt for the man he thinks killed his wife, which is the last thing he remembers. The film is presented in two different sequences of scenes interspersed during the movie. A series in black and white is shown chronologically, and a series of colour sequences is shown in reverse order. The two sequences meet at the film’s end, producing one complete narrative.

He then becomes the most unconventional prisoner. The film is an uplifting, deeply satisfying prison drama with a sensitive direction and fine performances.
The United States Library of Congress selected the film to be preserved in the National Film Registry for being culturally, historically and significant. The significant and enduring public appreciation for the film has often been complex for critics to define. It has been the top-one film on IMDB since its release in 2008.
