Martin Scorsese to Direct Film on Jesus Following Encounter with Pope

Soaring on the high of Killers of the Flower Moon’s success at the Cannes Film Festival, Martin Scorsese is on a post-Cannes tour of Italy. The acclaimed filmmaker, known for being religious, met Pope Francis over the weekend.

Scorsese and his wife Helen Morris had the pleasure of meeting Pope Francis during a brief private audience at the Vatican before he attended the “The Global Aesthetics of the Catholic Imagination” conference. It was this encounter with the Pope that inspired him to announce a film on Jesus Christ. According to reports, the director announced the project on Saturday during a Rome conference at the Vatican.

He said, “I have responded to the Pope’s appeal to artists in the only way I know how: by imagining and writing a screenplay for a film about Jesus,” He also added that he is about to start making the film, suggesting that this movie could be his next endeavor. According to Variety, Scorsese’s manager Rick Yorn did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the director’s new religion-related project.

Scorsese’s upcoming film, “ Killers of the Flower Moon” is adapted from a book of the same name. The movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Brendan Fraiser, Lily Gladstone and Robert De Niro in lead roles. The movie will be released on October 20, 2023.
