Lata Mangeshkar is the one singer everyone remembers, regardless of their mother tongue or what part of the country they come from. Lata Mangeshkar gave us so much to ponder upon, not just through songs but also through her words, her speeches, her interviews and merely by existing. It’s no shock that even today, people treat her birthday as if she were here with us. The demise of the most legendary singer of all time brought our worlds to a halt, and today, we’re here to celebrate her birthday.

Born in 1929, Lata Mangeshkar began her musical journey not so musically, but as an actor, since Bollywood wasn’t as developed. But, she didn’t like it, so eventually, she moved to singing. She moved to Mumbai in 1945 when Master Vinayak’s company moved its headquarters there. She started taking lessons in Hindustani classical music from Ustad Aman Ali Khan of Bhindibazaar Gharana. She sang “Paa Lagoon Kar Jori” for Vasant Joglekar’s Hindi-language movie Aap Ki Seva Mein (1946).

Her last two recorded music include a ‘Gayatri Mantra’ and a song that was a tribute to the Indian Army. ‘Saugandh Mujhe Is Mitti Ki’ – a tribute to the Indian Army and nation was her last recorded song that was released on March 30, 2019. The legendary singer also recorded the Gayatri Mantra for the wedding of Isha Ambani and Anand Piramal. The couple got married on December 12, 2018 and the legendary singer’s recording was played during the wedding.

In her lifetime, she’s sung more than 30,000 songs in 28 languages.
