It’s already inevitable — DreamWorks Animation’s legacy sequel, Kung Fu Panda 4, will carry the animated family franchise to $2 billion and beyond at the worldwide box office. The film opened with almost $59 million domestic, the second-biggest debut for the Kung Fu Panda series, even as Dune: Part Two held strong with $46 million in North America and an incredible 56% hold.
Kung Fu Panda 4 Box Office Collections
The Kung Fu Panda 4 box office is projected to gross a 3-day total of $31.5 million in domestic theatres by the end of its second weekend. In addition to making the movie No. 1 for the second weekend in a row, this pushes its cumulative domestic total past the $100 million milestone. After Dune: Part Two, it will be the second 2024 release to pass that benchmark at the domestic box office.
Becoming the first animated movie to accomplish this milestone for the year is no small achievement, even in a year with a generally thin movie slate after many titles were pushed back to 2025 amid the 2023 writers and actors strikes.
Will It Chart Records
The movie has an estimated budget of $85 million, meaning its break-even point is likely north of $170 million. This would compare favourably to the previous Kung Fu Panda movies, with grossing between $521.1 million and $665.7 million worldwide.
It also remains to be seen if Kung Fu Panda 4 is the highest-grossing animated movie of the year. This seems unlikely, as July sees the release of Despicable Me 4, the next instalment in the massive blockbuster franchise that introduced the Minions.
Keep in mind that Kung Fu Panda 4 has only opened in relatively few international markets so far. It hits significant regions in the coming weeks, including most of Western Europe, much of Latin America, China, the rest of North America, and the rest of Asia-Pacific. This means the big opening we saw is just a preview of what’s to come when the film rolls out through the rest of March and the first half of April.
