Kiran Rao reveals inspiration beyond Laapata Ladies! Credits the film’s success to women

Kiran Rao talks about Laapata Ladies

In a recent conversation, Kiran Rao spoke about the daily hardships of working and non-working women, society’s expectations of them, and the fight for independence. She credited Laapata Ladies success to women.

Kiran Rao stated, “Beyond a point, as an artist, you become acclimated to the concept that anything you produce will elicit reactions. In some ways, that’s your responsibility…You need to make room for it and take a step back. I learned to do so because I grew up in a normal home and was suddenly thrust into the spotlight. But I knew the media was only interested in me as Aamir Khan’s wife. They did not recognize me. “It was difficult at first because I felt I was losing my identity.”

Kiran went on to explore the daily hardships of both working and non-working women, society’s expectations of them, and the fight for freedom that they face in all aspects of their lives. Highlighting why it took her almost ten years to direct her second picture – Kiran’s directorial debut, Dhobi Ghat, was released in 2011 – she stated, “I had been writing since Dhobi Ghat, but I wasn’t really thrilled with the scripts. So, while the hunt was ongoing, Aamir came across this script while judging a competition in 2018. He told me the story in one phrase. Once I got it, I was impressed as well.

Laapata Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao, was released in theaters on March 1st to rave reviews from critics and audiences.
