“It grew me emotionally,” says Rahul Desai as ‘Dil Se’ completes its Silver Jubilee

Dil Se, launched in 1998 is a Bollywood romantic thriller movie, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta. Back in the 90s, this movie hit a Box Office collection of 28.4 crores.

In an avid fan’s own words, “Dil Se had the most amazing climax ever… still remember the collective gasp in the theatre when SRK and Manisha hug in the end…the anticipation of the bomb exploding was unnerving…and when it did..there was pin drop silence with Sonu Nigam’s soul-piercing rendition of Mujhe maut ki god mein sone de.”

When Film Companion interviewed Rahul Desai on completing 25 years, he initiated with, “It’s one of the rare movies I didn’t have the courage to go back to. It instantly grew me emotionally.”

Anchor Anupama Chopra, a former journalist added that when the song Satrangi Re went viral, it was misunderstood as a reel mix, leading to a deep sense of disappointment in people after Roja and Bombay. Little did they know, ‘The Holy Trinity’ of producers won over the audience the 3rd time as well.

On the downside, Rahul mentions that the weird contrast between an intense, terrorism-themed backstory and a centered romantic storyline is found deeply problematic by many people. Justifying it, he says that since the crux of SRK’s toxic character was that he was from mainstream India while the actress Manisha Koirala was from peripheral India, there was no better way of portraying it. Anupama continues that SRK’s already-established reputation as a romantic hero squared down Dil Se’s cringy script significantly.
