Indian writers are extending their support to the WGA strike.

About 11500 members representing the Writers Guild of America (WGA) went on a strike early this week demanding better wages, higher minimum pay, more writers per show, and shorter exclusive contracts among other things. Another important issue is that WGA would like to see each member of a writing team receive their own pension and health care funds.

India’s Screenwriters Association  (SWA) has requested its members to halt their work on US-based films and web series. The SWA General Secretary Zaman Habib said the WGA is making a legitimate request on behalf of the writers’ fraternity and they stand in solidarity with them. We have a great association with the writers guild of America (WGA), the Writers Guild of Israel, and Great Britain, we are also affiliated with the International Affiliation of Writers Guild (IAWG), and we are one of the members so we keep supporting each other, Habib told PTI.

Habib said SWA, which consists of about 55,000 members across the country is in discussions with Indian producers about the problems local writers facing, we also want to negotiate with our producers and we need their support. We are also ready with our minimum basic contract and we are negotiating with producers individually now.
