Hollywood writer strike: A fight

The Hollywood writers’ strike began this week over salary, but corporations like Netflix and Disney’s refusal to say whether or not artificial intelligence may eventually replace human scriptwriters has further increased tension and panic on the picket lines.

Programmes like ChatGPT, which have a rapidly improving ability to uncannily simulate human conversation, have recently alarmed numerous sectors. This week, the White House invited Big Tech to a meeting to go over the dangers.

The Writers Guild of America requested legally enforceable agreements to control the use of AI as part of the weeks-long negotiations with studios and streaming services that ended on Monday. According to the recommendations, no screenplays created by AI may be classified as “literary” or “source” content, criteria used by the industry to determine who receives royalties.

According to the WGA, studios “rejected our proposal” and reacted with an offer to meet once a year to “discuss technological advancements.”

“It’s nice for them to offer to have a meeting about how they’re exploiting it against us!” said WGA negotiating committee member Eric Heisserer, who authored the Netflix blockbuster “Bird Box.”
