South Industry Shows Complete Domination at the India Box Office in 2023. This year belongs to the Tamil Film Industry as it managed to top the list of box office as it completely dominated the Worldwide collections. Two of the Bollywood films on the list were directed by South directors. South domination is inevitable.
1) Salaar: Part One Cease Fire – 175cr + ( estimated)
Prabhas action thriller film Salaar: Part One Cease Fire was released without any audio or marketing and did exceptionally well on its first day despite of lack of PVR and Inox theatres. Salaar directed by KGF fame Prashanth Neel did well globally, especially in different language regions. It came out in five languages worldwide: Hindi, Telugu, English, Tamil, and Kannada. Releasing it in so many languages helped it become a big success at the box office.
2) LEO – 148.5 crore
LEO action entertainer from Lokesh Cinematic universe directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj broke the record set by Rajinikanth. As the first 2 films of LCU are smashing hits, the expectations were sky high on LEO too. Carrying all this buzz around it, Leo has become the biggest hits of Tamil Film Industry as it did an exceptionaly well with any marketing .
3) Adipurush – 136.8 crore
Adipurush was released on 16 June to negative reviews from critics, who criticised the film’s screenplay, dialogues and visuals. The mythological action film based on the Hindu epic Ramayana. The film is directed and co-written by Om Raut was released with lot of expectation and emerged as a box office bomb.
4) Jawan – 129.6 crore
Shah Rukh Khan’s action thriller film Jawan directed by south director become the second highest grossing Bollywood movie ever globally , behind Dangal. According to Sacnilk, the movie has grossed an impressive Rs 1,055 crore worldwide. Pathaan wrapped up its domestic run with Rs 543 crore and the film minted Rs 1050 crores worldwide.
5) Animal – 115.9 crore
Released to negative reviews Animal didn’t just do well in India but it became a hit all around the world, making a big impact in different countries. The film has earned a total of Rs 100 Crores Worldwide only on the first day at the box office, as stated by Sacnilk.
6) Pathaan – 104.8 crore
SRK ‘s action film Yash Raj spy verse Pathaan grossed Rs 1050 crore worldwide, becoming the second highest grossing Indian film of 2023 (highest before being surpassed by Khan’s next release Jawan), the third-highest-grossing Hindi film of all time, and the sixth-highest-grossing Indian film of all time.
7) Tiger 3 – 94.8 crore
Salama Khan action film from the Yash raj Spy Verse Tiger 3 directed by Maneesh Sharma has also defeated the film at the domestic box office by doing business of Rs 273.8 crore in 16 days. The film underperformed than expected.
8) Jailer – 91.2 crore
Rajinikanth ‘s action film Jailer is directed by Nelson was released theatrically on 10 August to positive reviews from critics and became the second highest-grossing Tamil film of 2023 and sixth highest-grossing Indian film of 2023 and 15th highest-grossing Indian film.
9) Ponniyin Selvan: Part Two – 64.5 crore
Tamil-language epic historical action drama film directed by Mani Ratnam grossed Rs 345 crore and is currently the third highest-grossing Tamil film of 2023 and one of the highest-grossing Tamil films worldwide.
10) Dunki – 58.2 crore
Another Shah Rukh Khan film made into the list. Dunki is latest comedy-drama, has made an impressive entry into theaters, earning between Rs 30 to 35 crore on its opening day.
