First Malayalam movie to cross 200 crores: 2018

2018 is an Indian Malayalam-language survival thriller film directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, who wrote the screenplay with Akhil P. Dharmajan. The film stars Tovino Thomas, Kunchacko Boban, Narain, Asif Ali, Vineeth Sreenivasan, and Lal, with an ensemble supporting cast. The film was based on events during the 2018 Kerala floods.

By surpassing the 200 crore milestone at the box office, the hit movie “2018” has accomplished a tremendous feat. In order to communicate the happy news with his friends and followers, producer Venu Kunnappilly used his social media accounts. According to reports, the budget of “2018” is roughly 5–6 times greater than that of a typical Malayalam movie.

The Film Exhibitors United Organisation of Kerala (FEUOK) has announced a protest by closing movie theatres in response to “2018” being switched to OTT after only 33 days of its theatrical run. This announcement comes amid the success of the movie. Despite the controversy, “2018” has won over audiences’ hearts and become a box office hit, grossing over 200 crores.

The movie recently began streaming on SonyLiv, allowing a larger audience to take advantage of its alluring plot in other languages. The Telugu version of the movie was distributed by Geetha Arts, which profited from it.
