Director Shonali Bose explains why she doesn’t stand for National Anthem in theatres

Shonali Bose who is famous for her film ‘The Sky Is Pink’ was recently called ‘Disgusting’ for refusing to stand up in a theatre when National Anthem was being played. She then later shared a video on her Instagram explaining why she does that everytime.

She started the video by saying, ‘I love watching films. But one thing that I hate is the culture that suddenly changed which was implemented in 2016 that National Anthem should be played in the theatres. And I never stood even once and I refuse to stand because I feel it is inappropriate place when people have come here for entertainment and by playing the national anthem, forcing some sort of Nationalism down our throats. People I go with also don’t want to stand but they do it because they don’t want a pangaa.’

She further said that it’s been 7 years and she never stood and that she had the panga for first time. She also spoke about what is Patriotism and Nationalism. Explaining the terms she said it is the freedom to raise the questions and also questioning the government regarding the various issues that happened in our country. She also told that she loves our National Anthem and that she sings it on Independence and Republic days but she is never going to sing in movie theatres. And that our Goverment is forcing us to sing it in the place where people go casually to get some entertainment.

Many have been commenting on this video, few are calling her out for this kind of attitude whereas many are supporting her, calling her Bravo for speaking the truth.
