CBFC’s rigorous filtering out of religious mentions extends towards Gadar 2 as well

CBFC’s final word on Gadar 2

Gadar 2, the continuation of the blockbuster Gadar from 2001 is set to release on August 11, 2023. The undying love and patriotic spirit of Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel’s on-screen love story is exciting the fans like never-before. Today, CBFC aka the Censor Board finalized the movie with a U/A but at the cost of 10 cuts. Lately, the rigorous filtering out and harsh scanning of movies with even the slightest angle of religion is not uncommon. No doubt, it was meticulous in the past as well. But after Adipurush was considered a great deal of disrespect to Ramayana, after Om Raut, the audience’s next target was CBFC for approving the movie to go on air.

Even the trailer’s release was rescheduled because of the repetitive use of the word ‘Pakistan’ by the principal characters. Several parts had to be muted before the clip could be made public. Now, the entire movie’s screening lands the Censor Board to the decision that there will be the following changes made:

The scene of the rioters chanting ‘Har Har Mahadev’ have been removed. The ‘Shiv Tandav’ shlokas were replaced with the song line ‘Akhand hai…who sang hai’. The word ‘Bastard’ has been replaced with ‘Idiot’. The designation of Defence Minister was incorrectly depicted. It was rectified to ‘Raksha Mantri’ as per the orders if CBFC. Then the word ‘Tirange’ was changed to ‘Jhande’ and the ‘Har Jhande Ko…’ dialogue was suitably modified. The line in the thumri song ‘Bata De Sakhi’ was replaced by ‘Bata De Piya Kahaan Bitaayi Shaam’. A dialogue ‘Dono ek hi toh hai. Baba Nanak ne bhi yahin kaha hai’ was replaced with ‘Ek noor te sab jag upaje. Baba Nanak ne bhi yehi kaha hai’ with references to the holy Quran and Bhagavad Gita.

India is a secular country where countless religions are worshipped and practiced every single day. On the downside, things quickly go south if a religious comment is made that in one way or other the oppose the faith. Consequently, the person is caught hold of and punished in a sense for their act. Movies in the past have wrapped their scripts around religion but Adipurush became the threshold of religious citizens’ outrage, giving rise to a cut-throat deadline for the CBFC to adhere to.

Other than Gadar 2, OMG 2 went through 27 cuts and still got an ‘A’ certificate. With such strict scrutiny, is CBFC doing a good job or taking away the right from filmmakers to portray societal issues through their films?
