Young actors usually struggle with alcohol or substance abuse. It is something that often accompanies such fame and money, though it takes a certain degree of self awareness to accept and work on it. In a recent podcast chat, actor Tom Holland opened up about his struggle with alcoholism and his year-long journey of sobriety.
The actor began by saying that he could handle large amounts of alcohol, saying that he had been “drinking a lot” and, after an especially alcohol-filled season one year, decided to try going sober for the month of January. The actor went on to say “All I could think about was having a drink. I was waking up thinking about it. I was checking the clock, ‘When’s it 12?'” Holland recounted. “And it just really scared me. Wow, maybe I have a little bit of an alcohol thing.”
After the realization donned on him, the actor decided to stretch his dry month further, stating “Two months go by and I was still really struggling. I felt I couldn’t be social. I felt I couldn’t go to the pub and have a lime soda. I couldn’t go out to dinner. I was really, really struggling. And I started to really worry that maybe I had an alcohol problem.”
The Spiderman actor then set his new goal to stay away from alcohol till his birthday and when the day came he was “the happiest I’ve ever been in my life.” “I could sleep better. I could handle problems better. Things that would go wrong on set that would set me off, I could take in my stride,” Holland recalled.
“I had such better mental clarity. I felt better. I felt fitter. And I just said to myself, ‘Why am I enslaved to this drink? Why am I so obsessed with having this drink?'” he went on to add that his sobriety journey was, “the best thing I’ve ever done,” shared that he’s a year and a half into it now.
