When John Cena was onstage at the 96th Oscars on Sunday, not much was left to the imagination. However, a program producer claimed that the presenter adhered to the strictest guidelines when it came to her nudity.
“We ensured that he appeared like a Ken doll from the front,” Rob Mills, executive vice president of Walt Disney Television, said to Variety.
The S&P team initially insisted that it had to be abundantly evident that Cena was not nude. Subsequently, the producers collaborated with the network to ascertain their legal boundaries.
Mills begins, “I’m going to educate you a little here.” You are unable to display a bulge or a crack. “What happens if he drops that card?” was another question. We therefore made sure that he seemed to be a Ken doll from the front. The envelope was Velcroed to the rear of his cracked area to ensure it stayed in place. Beyond that, though, he was nude.
According to McNearney, the producers practiced the Cena scene on a closed set in order to maintain its surprise element. She adds that there was a lot of back and forth regarding the network’s policies and procedures.
