Even though over half a dozen new films arrived this weekend, the only one expected to take some opening was Laapataa Ladies. Kiran Rao made her directorial comeback after 13 years with Laapataa Ladies.

The positive word-of-mouth and solid critical reception have helped the film to grow organically. Laapataa Ladies performed low on its first day at the box office, earning an estimated ₹ 0.75 Cr India net. However, it collected more on its second day over the weekend.

Laapataa Ladies managed to earn ₹75 lakh. It managed to better its number on Saturday and earned ₹1.60 crore, thanks to excellent word-of-mouth publicity. Riding on great reviews from critics and viewers alike, Kiran Rao’s latest directorial earned ₹1.8 crore on Sunday. The total box office collection in the domestic market now stands at ₹4 crore.

The overall occupancy rate across India was at the highest in Chennai (79.25%). Bengaluru (40.75%) and Pune (37%) come next. Movie critics expected the film would reach Rs 5 crore by the end of the weekend. However, the film remained flattish on Sunday.

Kiran Rao plans to submit a movie for the Oscars

Kiran Rao hinted about submitting the movie after the theatrical release, seeing the public’s reaction. If our film is accepted, we will submit it for the coveted Oscars. A particular community is responsible for evaluating and choosing the year’s best films. On March 1, 2024, we will not receive the recognition we so much look forward to, which suggests the film’s release.”

The movie had its world premiere as Lost Ladies at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 8.

Laapataa Ladies Plot

A just-married man loses his wife on a busy train because he mistakes another bride for hers. Both of them realize the mix-up once they get to his village. The story is about a man looking for his real wife and the journey of a woman who ends up in the wrong place.

The film is based on an award-winning story by Biplab Goswami. Sneha Desai has penned the screenplay and dialogues, with Divyanidhi Sharma credited for additional dialogues. It was produced by Kiran Rao, Aamir Khan, and Jyoti Deshpande.
