Adipurush and its short-lived “success”

The talk of the town, “Adipurush,” a modern take on the Hindu epic Ramayana made with an equally epic budget of 500cr has made quite some waves since its release on June 16th. Though the film garnered negative opinions post the release of its teaser, director Om raut’s efforts to salvage the film by releasing a trailer more catered to the audience, briefly did go according to plan, seeing as Adipurush opened to house full theaters, roaring fans, and a day one collection of 140 cr.

Whether it was due to Prabhas’s pan-Indian stardom, movie enthusiasts happy to have something to watch, or everyone’s collective curiosity (because even if something is horrible, people want to know why), the film has managed to keep its day 2 and day 3 collections at a whopping 100 cr each. Riding on this high, the movie’s makers have decided to release several posts and statements hyping the movie’s popularity and hosted a success meet, probably realizing they soon wouldn’t be able to.

Unfortunately, as the weekend has ended, reviews dished out, and people having better things to do the collection of day 4 has dropped significantly to a mere 35 cr failing the “Monday test” and halting the cinema’s initial momentum. If this downward incline continues, the celebrated success will be short, unlike the movie’s fight sequence, adding to Prabhas’s list of post-bahubali flops. Though the story of Ram is timeless and much celebrated this story of Adipurush may not be.
