Gyeongseong Creature early review, is a must-watch, gothic drama but not as scary as the hype

Gyeongseong Creature, starring Park Soo Joon as Jung Tae Sung and Han Soo He, is a must-watch, gothic-horror drama with dark elements and creatures created by humans for destruction.

The story is set in the 1980s in Gyeong Seong, where Japan had control over Joseon(South Korea); the Japanese innovations tended to seek people’s lives as they got hold of ordinary people and criminals for human experiments. After frequent failures, they finally succeed by turning a human into a vicious monster. After being tormented by Japanese officials, the rich man in the town, Jung Tae Sung, decides to accomplish a task allotted to him to survive the crisis.

Jung Tae Sung falls in love with the girl with beautiful eyes (Han So Hee), who is regarded as a sleuth of that period (a private detective), the man who wants to leave the country if he fails to accomplish the task chooses to survive along with Chae-Ok and sets to the Onseong Hospital which was off-limits to the commoners, only the Japanese officials and reputed Josean families were allowed to enter the hospital. The hospital also happens to own a lab where human experiments are held. While finding a victim and the leading lady’s mother, Jung Tae Sung and Chae Ok set on an unpredictable adventure.

Thoughts on Gyeongseong Creature Season 1:

The character development and the personality of Jung Tae Sung make the 7-episode series entertaining to watch; the savage female lead and the chemistry of the leads are another best part of the series.Park Seo Joon’s employees, and Wi Ha Jun play crucial roles in the drama’s progress. Jang Tae Sung’s genuine concern and his friendship for Kwon Jun Taek subsides every other relationship, while Kwon’s actions questions his loyalty towards relationships. Jang Tae Sung’s portrayal shifts from a selfish rich to a walking green flag as the drama progresses, as his past justifies his present actions in the rat-race of survival. Jang Tae Sung falls over the heap of skeletons, did he become one or is he caught. Will Myeong Ja be another Seo Yi Kyung from Sweet Home 2, who is going to give birth to a monster baby. Season 2 holds answers for these questions.  Overall, it is a well-written, edge-of-the-seat entertainer. One drawback of the drama happens to be the genre the horror drama encompasses gothic and dark themes but is not as scary as depicted in the trailer and the posters.

Gyeongsang Creature stars Park Seo Jun as Jang Tae Sang and Han So Hee as Yoon Chan Ok, and Wi Ha Jun in the lead roles. Gyeongsang Creature Season-1 streamed on Netflix on December 22, 2023. The sequel is slated to release on Netflix on January 5, 2024.
