Grey’s Anatomy is renewed for Season 21! ABC officially confirmed

Grey’s Anatomy

Grey’s Anatomy has been renewed for a 21st season on ABC, which is owned by Disney. The pickup, which has been in the works for some time, came just as the network’s strike-hit 20th season returned.

The renewal will bring the Shonda Rhimes-created medical drama back for a second season under new showrunner Meg Marinis, who succeeded Krista Vernoff at the end of season 19.

Marinis has been on Grey’s Anatomy since the third season, starting as a writer’s production assistant and working her way up.

She subsequently worked as a writers’ assistant and medical researcher before rising through the ranks to executive producer, a position she maintained for the previous four seasons before being appointed to the big chair.

“Grey’s Anatomy fans has propelled us into a historic 21st season, for which I could not be more grateful,” Rhimes said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “Meg Marinis’ storytelling is a gift that continues to keep the show vibrant, compelling and alive, and I can’t wait to see what she has in store for next season.”

No information about the returning cast has been provided, as Grey’s has traditionally viewed turnover as part of the continuous plot.

Ellen Pompeo, the show’s leading woman, is anticipated to remain active after leaving as a series regular before season 20.

Pompeo’s Meredith Grey continues to give her signature narration on Grey’s, while the actress and her ABC Signature-based Calamity Jane label executive produce.

The medical drama remains the longest-running primetime medical drama in television history, having surpassed ER in 2019. In addition, the drama is the longest-running primetime scripted series in ABC’s history.

The massive archive of episodes recently emerged on Hulu and Netflix, introducing the series to a new audience on the site.

The show becomes the third ABC series to earn an early renewal for the 2024-25 broadcast season, joining Quinta Brunson’s Abbott Elementary and Ryan Murphy’s 911.
