The new-age cinema has been making visible attempts to be more inclusive in its own way. From representation of the LGBTQ+ community to speaking of mental health issues, Bollywood has a new-found fascination. Women’s Day 2024 is around the corner. Ahead of this grand day, let us look at the trans women in the Indian film industry.
Gazal Dhaliwal
Gazal Dhaliwal is an award-winning Bollywood scriptwriter who openly advocates for LGBTQ+ rights. She was an assistant writer in the film ‘Wazir’. After which, she wrote dialogues for ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’ and co-wrote the screenplay for ‘Qarib Qarib Singlle’ and ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga’.
Ivanka Das
She began her career in the entertainment industry as a model and later participated in the dance reality show Dance Deewane. Das’ debut role featured her as a brothel owner in the 2019 web series Ye Hai #Mandi. Apart from this, she has also featured in MTV Beats Love Duet album song Khud Ko Hi Paake with Nikhita Gandhi, Bombay Begums. Ivanka Das is an actress, dancer, choreographer, model, and drag queen. She is a total rockstar!
Mairembam Ronaldo Singh
Mairembam Ronaldo Singh, also known as Henthoi Mairembam, debuted with Pataal Lok. She played the role of Cheeni, and fans loved her act. Through her role, she showed all the struggles faced by the LGBTQ community
Kalki Subramanian
A trans rights activist and actor, Kalki Subramanian, played her first lead role in the 2011 Tamil film Narthagi. Later, she also had a cameo appearance in Sarkar, which increased her popularity.
Trinetra Haldar Gummaraju
The Instagram celebrity and doctor Trinetra Haldar Gummaraju is now also an actress. The influencer made her acting debut in the Amazon Prime web series ‘Made in Heaven’ season 2. She was also a part of the Malayalam movie ‘Ammu’ in 2022. She has titles including Forbes India 30 Under 30 (2022) and GQ India 50 Most Influential Young Indians (2022).
Anjali Ameer
She made her acting debut with the Tamil movie ‘Peranbu’ in 2019 and went on to do another significant films, including ‘Suvarna Purushan’ and ‘Ammu’. The actress has predominantly worked in Tamil and Malayalam movies and was the first transgender contestant to appear in Bigg Boss Malayalam.
Many trans actors in India have been making us proud for ages. Be it as actors, directors or screenwriters, trans women/men are making it big in Bollywood. While their representation exists, it needs to be increased.
