What is Oscar bait? This year’s Oscar bait movie !

Oscar bait is a term used in the film community for movies that appear to have been produced for the sole purpose of earning nominations for Academy Awards, or “Oscars,” as they are commonly known. Due to their content or execution, certain films are obvious Oscar bait movies, winning awards despite their relatively low reviews and receptions. These films often dominate at the Academy Awards.

Oscar-bait films are produced with the sole purpose of earning Academy Award nominations. Two common types of Oscar baits are period films that depict a major world tragedy and movies that push a social agenda in an overtly sentimental way. The ultimate Oscar-bait film combines these two elements into one film.

A major subset of this category is biographical films. The only thing Oscar likes more than a transformation is a transformation into a real person, preferably someone recognizable and in the public consciousness. Generally,  Oscar-bait films are preferred over others at the Oscars Look at the last several years of leading actor winners: Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill, Eddie Redmayne as Stephen Hawking, and Daniel Day-Lewis as Abraham Lincoln. Be sure to thank your hair and makeup team in your acceptance speech.

This year Oscar bait is Maestro

Maestro was helmed and starred by Bradley Cooper. The biographical film perfectly depicts the life of the relationship between American composer Leonard Bernstein and his wife Felicia Montealegre. Bradley Cooper’s transformation into Leonard Bernstein is commendable and is expected to win multiple awards including best director and best actor for Maestro.
