Like Tollywood films Waltair Veeraya and Veera Simha Reddy, Kollywood films Thunivu and Varisu are competing with each other in this Sankranthi race.
Vijay and Ajith’s films ‘Varisu’ and ‘Thunivu’ are locked to have a box office battle this Pongal, and both films are releasing on Jan 11 in Tamil. Both films are made on a massive budget, and the bookings for both have been heated up.
However, interesting is that Vijay’s film beats Ajith’s films in the pre-release business with 100 crores. According to the trade report, Ajith’s ‘Thunivu’ has been sold for Rs 60 crores, Rs 2.5 crore, Rs 3.6 crores, and Rs 4 crore respectively in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and overseas. The OTT rights of the Ajith starrer have been locked for Rs 65 crores, and the film has reportedly earned a total of Rs 194 crores in the pre-release business.
On the other hand, ‘Varisu‘ theatrical rights have been sold for Rs 70 crores, Rs 6.5 crores, Rs 8 crores, and Rs 35 crores respectively in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and overseas. Whereas the Hindi version has been sold for Rs 34 crore, and the OTT rights have been sold for Rs 70 crore. The total pre-release business of ‘Varisu’ aggregates around Rs 295 crores.
So, with this, Vijay’s film has earned over Rs 100 crores more than ‘Thunivu’ in the pre-release business, which is surprising to the Kollywood fans as both heroes are considered as of the same star status in Tamil Nadu.
