Throwback to the only film that earned 2000 crores

The movie that set a standard no one can break

Dangal, for the unversed, means the ‘wrestling arena’ but it is also used connotatively to describe a chaotic situation – and the movie did exactly that in the theatres – but the sweet type, the type of disaster you’d expect when you make a blockbuster movie like Dangal.

Aamir Khan, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra, Sakshi Tanwar, Zaira Wasim, Suhani Bhatnagar, Aparshakti Khurana and Girish Kulkarni – when you hear these names together, you expect only the popular ones to stand out. But with Dangal, every single character was so crucial and meticulously placed that if even one was to be subtracted or replaced, the movie would fall short of its quality. Released in the December of 2016, it’s been 7 years and Dangal still singlehandedly remains the only movie in Indian Cinema to surpass the 1000 crore benchmark.

Sure, Indian Cinema yields crazy amounts of money when A grade celebrities are casted. 100 crore has become an everyday nuance nowadays. But Dangal reached a milestone no one would dare to touch – 2070 crores.

The movie is based on a true story of two girls who came from a regressive, women-oppressing part of India but their father was a revolutionary man in his own way. The time when the sport ‘Dangal’ (wrestling) was known as a ‘boy thing’, he picked his daughters up and taught them how to wrestle as a former wrestler himself. The epic dialogue, “Mhari Chhoriya Chhoro Se Kam Hai Ke?” (Are my girls any lesser than boys?) burnt the world so much that even now when we read those words, the scene comes slashing in front of our eyes and Aamir Khan’s heavy voice fills the senses with a warm, fierce emotion. Through his daughter, he’s able to fulfill his dream of seeing a gold medal in his house from the Commonwealth Games.

In the real word, these girls are popularly loved as the ‘Phogat sisters’. Babita and Geeta Phogat – the real-life champions – are currently in their early thirties, while their father, Mahavir Singh Phogat is in the BJP political party.
