This Harry Potter actor auditioned without reading the book…

Tom Felton, who turned 36 yesterday, auditioned for Harry Potter without reading the books, but his disinterest and arrogance won over the directors.

Tom Felton, known for his portrayal of Draco Malfoy in the ‘Harry Potter film series, revealed that his limited knowledge of the franchise might have played a role in his landing the iconic role. Surprisingly, according to his IMDB profile, Felton had not read any Harry Potter books before auditioning for the part of Draco Malfoy in 1999. He shared that director Chris Columbus posed questions about J.K. Rowling’s books during auditions.

Felton recalled the audition process, saying, “They lined up all the Dracos, I guess, and asked them which part of the book they were most excited about seeing made into a film.” At this point, Felton realized he was at a disadvantage, as he needed to gain background knowledge. He admitted to mimicking the answer of the person beside him. However, the director, Chris Columbus, saw through his attempt to bluff his way through, which may have worked in Felton’s favour. He humorously concluded, “It worked out in my favor!”

Throughout all eight Harry Potter films, Felton successfully portrayed the character of Draco Malfoy, the Slytherin rival to the series’ protagonist, Harry Potter.
