If 100 crores are considered a significant milestone in 2023, imagine how grand it was 22 years ago in 2001. Yes, this movie has touched a target they didn’t even set, a bar they didn’t know they could surpass. In 2001, when people were still using pagers and people with Android phones were considered lavish, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha pocketed 133 crores worth of box office collection. Wondering why? Its storyline and background theme is the reason. Back when the aftermath of the Indo-Pak partition was fresher than it is now, the rage between Hindus and Muslims was more prevalent as well. In a time like that, director-producer Anil Sharma created a film where during the partition, Tara marries Sakina and they live a happy life. However, their happiness is short-lived when Sakina’s father forces her to stay in Pakistan and separates her from her family. It gave out the message that it’s love that matters above everything else.
On June 9th, 2023, the team decided to re-release this masterpiece in 4k, Dolby Atmos, and of course, with extra scenes. As of now, Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel, the real-life Tara-Sakina are seen on carpets conducting promotional events for the movie. This pair has fairly matured over 2 decades but the spark is still alive. Sunny looks like the OG Tara Singh again with his light green Pagg, blazer-denim look and, Sakina in her strapless long maroon gown.
Sunny Deol is back with a roaring confidence. He was seen crowded by people in a theatre where he reenacted the iconic dialogue from Gadar, “Hindustan Zindabad hai, Zindabad tha, aur Zindabad rahega!” that left the entire room in a pool of patriotic unity and goosebumps. On the other hand, Gadar 2: The Katha Continues is set to release around Independence Day.
