The Telugu Film Industry completes 91 years!

Bhakta Prahlada is a historical film that was released in 1932 and is regarded as the first Telugu sound film. It was directed by H. M. Reddy and produced by Ardeshir Irani of the Imperial Film Company. The film stars Sindhoori Krishna Rao as Prahlada, with a supporting cast of Munipalle Subbiah, Surabhi Kamalabai, Doraswamy Naidu, Chitrapu Narasimha Rao, and L. V. Prasad. Today marks the 91st anniversary of the film’s release.

Although the film was positively received by audiences, critics had mixed reviews, citing its similarity to the stage version, poor sound recording, and low-quality images. The film is now lost, and only a few stills, advertisements, and reviews are known to have survived.

Later, another Bhakta Prahlada was also released, and it impressed many. The 1967 Indian Telugu-language Hindu mythological movie directed by Chitrapu Narayana Rao stars S. V. Ranga Rao, Anjali Devi, and Roja Ramani (in her film debut) in the lead roles and is based on the legend of Prahlada, a character in the Bhagavata Purana known for his devotion to the Hindu god Vishnu.

Over these 91 years, the Telugu film industry has ventured into many technologies and produced many stars. With RRR, we are going big at the international level as well.
