The Marvel What-If: Robert Downey Jr.’s Missed Character

In a recent revelation by filmmaker Jon Favreau, it has been disclosed that renowned actor Robert Downey Jr. was initially in discussions for a different Marvel character before ultimately donning the iconic suit of Iron Man. Favreau, who directed the first two Iron Man movies and played a pivotal role in shaping the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), unveiled this surprising detail during a recent interview.

Although the specific character that Downey Jr. was considered for remains undisclosed, it has sparked immense speculation among fans and media alike. Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Tony Stark/Iron Man has become synonymous with his name, catapulting him to global stardom and solidifying his place in MCU history.

While it’s intriguing to ponder which alternate character Downey Jr. might have brought to life, one thing is certain: fate intervened and gifted us with the brilliant portrayal of Iron Man, forever etching Robert Downey Jr.’s name in the annals of superhero cinema.

To celebrate the 15th anniversary of Iron Man, which kicked off Phase One of the MCU in 2008, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and Favreau sat down to look back on how the film came to be with Downey as the lead.

I remember you had all met with Downey already for like Doctor Doom or something on another project,” The Mandalorian creator said. “I think he had come through on like maybe Fantastic Four, so everybody sort of knew who he was.”
